A Hollywood smile isn't always natural or the result of dental implants. More often, those beautiful, even teeth are veneers - prosthetic structures covering the visible part of the tooth.

Understanding the Technology

There are two methods of veneer installation - with and without significant tooth preparation. Traditional veneers require tooth preparation to create space for the ceramic and remove decay and unstable restorations.

Minimal-prep veneers require little to no tooth preparation, maximally preserving the enamel. The enamel is either slightly reduced or left untouched, depending on how dramatically the patient wants to change their tooth color and shape.

Thanks to ultra-thin plates of just 0.1-0.3 mm, the teeth look completely natural. This long-established technology is ideal for people without large fillings or significant defects. However, it limits the extent of color and shape changes possible.

The Procedure

First comes smile planning. After hearing the patient's wishes, the dentist conducts a photo protocol, takes a diagnostic scan or traditional impression, and sends it to the dental laboratory for modeling.

Once the model is ready, it's transferred to the patient's mouth using high-aesthetic plastic and a silicone key, allowing them to preview the final result. This procedure is called Mock-up. If the patient approves, the doctor proceeds to the next stage.

The enamel's surface layer is treated with a bur or sandblaster to create roughness. Then, impressions are taken either traditionally using silicone material or with a digital scanner.

The traditional method is preferred for thin veneers to avoid model inaccuracies. Temporary composite veneers are then placed.

Permanent veneers take 5-10 days to prepare, depending on the dental technician's schedule. After fitting and patient approval, the veneers are fixed. A follow-up check occurs in 1-2 weeks.

Longevity

Three key factors affect veneer longevity: material quality, bonding adhesive, and patient lifestyle. For example, frequently eating hard foods or nuts can cause faster wear and potential chipping.

With proper technique and correct bite alignment, veneers can last 10-15 years. After 10 years, an examination is recommended to check if replacement is needed.

If removal is necessary, a special laser can do this quickly and painlessly.

Who Shouldn't Get Minimal-Prep Veneers?

Traditional veneers or crowns are better for serious bite or dental problems. Treatment planning depends on the initial situation, but preserving tooth tissue is always prioritized.

Minimal-prep veneers aren't suitable for severely discolored teeth, as the thin ceramic would be too transparent.
